Like I noted earlier, and many users on the list pointed out, Apple itself hasn't been very good at playing by its own rules. Those of us who noticed and cared about it were a relatively small number, but the rest were somewhat sympathetic and eventually a consensus has begun to emerge about possible improvements to the app's UI. Simifilm has raised the question of the UI in the Mellel list, and gotten an interesting set of responses - many people simply hadn't noticed the metal interface. (For one, do you own the program? - I would think any developer is going to be more responsive to owners of their apps versus people who say, and I'm not saying you wrote this, "I would buy your app except for the asstastic metal." I, too, might be inclined to say to myself, "Well, if they are only worried about looks and not functionality, how likely is this person to buy my product anyway?") It's true, those requests have largely gone unanswered or declined - sorry if you got a dismissive note but, then, I don't know how you framed your own comment.

For some that is a matter of aesthetic clunkiness, but for others, like myself, it's also a matter of precious screen real estate when I'm working on my 12" PB. Many users on that list have also pointed out that many of the graphical elements are a little oversized.

But, as many users on the Mellel newsgroup have noted, the metal skin is only the veneer of a fairly decent and usable UI. So while Mellel may not be ready for me yet, I don't mind that they implement font handling and typography carefully.įireball: the Mellel developers are well aware that a number of people - you decide "some" or "many" - are not keen on their implementation of the metal UI. I think their word processor comparison chart also shows clearly that they're very much aware of what Mellel currently missses. They promised me that most of the features I'm looking for (Next Style, Keep with and Break before/after, Widows and Orphans and hyphenation) will be implemented in the next version. I mailed the developers some time ago and contrary to Fireball1244's experience I found them to be very responsive. I know several people writing in Hebrew who said that for Hebrew there's no alternative to Mellel on the Mac. Mellel's first goal is to deliever an app that can handle semitic and asian alphabets.

It's nice to have an app that finally takes full advantage of this format.

They introduced AAT with OSX, but still don't fully support OpenType.

I think Apple's own policy hasn't been to good in this regard. Well, OpenType support definitely isn't my number one request either, but OTOH I like the fact that Mellel is one of the very few apps that take typography serious.
